Aufgrund der extrem porösen Oberfläche des Bio-Plug, kann Wasserstrom in den Bio-Plug eindringen, um die Oberfläche des Korallenfragmentes sowohl von oben als auch von unten zu erreichen. Dadurch können die Korallenfragmente Nährstoffe aus der Wassersäule leichter herausfiltern.

Der Bio-Plug dient auch als Bio-Medium. In und auf der Oberfläche des Bio-Plugs wachsen sehr viele Bakterienkolonien, von denen viele leicht von den Korallenpolypen als Nahrung aufgenommen werden können, was die Wachstumsrate der Korallenfragmenten weiter erhöht.
